The 22-year-old carpenter is now looking forward to representing his grandparent’s country of Malta in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
Born in Australia, Brendan showed his class in the Warilla tournament, losing only one game and that was to the eventual champion.
The former Kiama High School student first became associated with the game when his mother Trish used to take him and other members of the family to bare foot bowls once a week at Jamberoo.
Brendan, the youngest member of the squad and nick-named ‘the baby’, started playing lawn bowls aged 15 as a member of the Jamberoo Bowling Club and has gone on to represent Oak Flats and Merrylands clubs before settling into the Dapto Citizens’ Club last year.
As it turned out, the move was timely as he won his way into the final of the club singles, only going down to one of the district’s top bowlers, Troy Somerville, in the final.
Spurred on by this effort, Brendan then entered the high profile District Singles and powered his way to the semi-finals where he downed Noel Davis from Towradgi and then took the honours with a grand final win over Windang’s Brett Pieper 31–21 in the final.
Brendan has a lot of time for Dapto Citizens’ Club’s Troy Somerville who has become his mentor and proudly included him in the club’s number one pennant team.
The quietly spoken Brendan has also been a member of the Illawarra U25 years team for several years and was this year promoted to the senior side.
Now he is looking forward to the Commonwealth Games at Delhi in India in October, where he and fellow local team mate Shaun Parnis (also from Dapto Citizens) will contest for Malta.
To help prepare himself for this challenge Brendan has been training in a gym and practising hard on the greens.
And why is he representing Malta? It’s all about pride in his grandparents and their Maltese connection.
