Old problem still on the agenda - September 2010

When will we get some action?

They pop up year after year and yet despite a lot of talk no real action to solve the problems take place.

Yes, the WIN stadium grandstand, the Dwyers old site, and neglected development land at Corrimal are still bones of contention.

Now we can add the old Oxford Tavern site to the list.

Down at WIN stadium parking and traffic issues have long dogged the development of a new western grand stand , and as each year goes by the cost goes up.

Now estimated to cost more than $15 million, the proposal has been given the nod, but the traffic problems must be fixed first and they are still very much in the melting pot.

Let’s face it; the stadium shouldn’t have been built there in the first place.

And adequate parking remains a problem for its neighbour The WIN Entertainment Centre. When they have a big show there like The Wiggles, for example, the parking is totally inadequate.

But Corrimal way there are two development sites sitting idle.

Once again traffic versus development is the major setback to progress.

And still the talk goes on.

Inner City Parking

The there’s the old Dwyers business site at the lower end of Crown Street which too has been sitting idle for too long now.

There’s a move – more talk – to have it turned into a car park.

What an agenda this would be.

A joint housing / parking development would be much better, and would be well received by traders at that end of town.

A car park to replace the Oxford tavern isn’t the worst idea going around, but is the area really suited to this plan.

There is good news with the opening of the new Chifley Hotel with its 168 rooms at the bottom end of Burelli Street.

Ho hum! Life goes on, or does it when these long-standing problems continue to plague us?

Election problems

I suppose one must make mention of our recent Federal Election.

What a battle is was, and still is.

My betting is another one.

And in passing on the question of where Australia stands, long live the Queen.

Let’s face it; the stadium shouldn’t have been built there in the first place. Spot on, John Bown. The Berkeley Sports & Social Club spent a lot of money on a feasibility study for the complex to be built in Berkeley where there was plenty of space at the time, but city vested interests stepped in and yes, we have a parking-less coloseum downtown, and people walking miles to get there ...and many won't bother.
