Seeing Stars
by Patricia Shepherd

Seeing Stars for the week beginning April 8, 2008

What of free will and astrology?

ARIES

Sunday saw the New Moon in your sign signaling an opportunity for new beginnings. Generally our rams don’t need any encouragement to focus on themselves so leave the past behind and use your energy and drive to move forwards.

TAURUS

A difficulty in expressing strong and intense emotions has you acting defensively. This then tends to discourage any social intercourse making you feel lonely and discouraged. Relax and be more realistic.

GEMINI

There is no appeasing you this week. Touchy and irritable has you clearing a room in no time flat. If it’s an argument you want then it is an argument you will get so choose your battle carefully.

CANCER

The New Moon in Aries in your Solar 10th house may see you adjusting to the needs of parents and/or the boss. This creates feelings, which may be difficult to suppress so dig deep and find the courage to meet them head on.

LEO

Don’t worry if you are full of creative ideas and projects but just can’t seem to get them off the ground. The time to move forward with them will be mid May so continue to plan with this in mind.

VIRGO

There is just no pleasing some people, so perhaps you shouldn’t even try they, only seem to bite your head off any way. A challenging week brought about by others that seem to be out of your control.

LIBRA

Venus your ruler has moved into your opposite sign of Aries so the needs of your partner may take precedence this month. This is fine but is there really any need for them to be soooo demanding.

SCORPIO

Mars your co ruler is opposite Jupiter for all of April, so a word of warning - this pairing of planets is known for its energy boost so if you max out and exceed your limits it is likely you will overtax yourself. Know your limits.

SAGITTARIUS

The opposition of Mars and Jupiter brings security issues to the for and whilst on the one hand it can be an extremely lucky transit when they are both squaring the Sun as they will all week, do not take any foolish risks.

CAPRICORN

Relationship changes seem to be afoot this week. Through talk and discussion you are able to move into a completely different situation but not until there is a letting go of some outdated thoughts and ideas.

AQUARIUS

Over the next few weeks your awareness is raised to the spiritual or humanitarian side of life and you may be drawn to groups or organisations that reflect these changing values. This helps you discover new ways of doing things that reflects your individuality.

PISCES

Although your physical energy levels may not be high during the week you may be highly receptive to the influence of others. Meditation will put things in perspective and help unclutter the mind.

Commonly Asked Questions

So the planets do not cause events?
No, they do not – they synchronise with the microcosmic patterns embedded in the psyche of the person and the indications found in the birth chart. When times are good or bad we no longer blame the gods. In taking responsibility for our own successes and failures, by understanding the drives that bring about situations and the meaning of planets in our horoscope, we have progressed to be able to use a certain level of free will. We are all unique, just as cosmic patterns are in a constant state of change, so are we.

What of free will and astrology?
One of the main reasons for our presence on earth is for us to become increasingly more self-realised or, stated in more psychological terms, it’s the individuated. The important task then is to find a means and a method for such progressive awareness, which combines safety and effectiveness. Astrology is one such means. In essence it is a vehicle for an ancient teaching through its own symbolic language and principles.

Astrology endeavours to show there is an intimate relationship among all the plans of nature: mineral, vegetable, animal, human, planetary, and galactic. Astrology is not magic, nor is it occult knowledge but a scientific study of the planets’ cycles and a creative artistic study of symbolic meaning of archetypes and of particular stages in the unfolding of the cycles.

As the planets continue to travel around the Sun and the horoscope unfolds, astrologers attempt to predict how the individual will experience the changes. Using an ephemeris or computer we can calculate the orbits (transits) of the planets years ahead of time thus able to ascertain when they will make contact with points in our natal charts. Thus, the natal chart is the template against which we measure all future evolution.

As to the question of fate or freewill astrologers may predict the timing and style of a forthcoming event (that which is fated) but it is the human part (the freewill) – the part not shown in the chart – which chooses the exact expression of the event.  From astrology’s point of view, there are no accidents.
