The world of cricket might now be all agog with the international twenty/20 competitions but Illawarra juniors have had a ten/10 competition sponsored by the DMW Recruitment and HR Group for many years. This unique competition has each fielder bowling one over and each batsman facing a maximum of 15 balls (or scoring 20 runs). A round robin is held before the semis and final and the batting order arrangements are such that every player usually gets at least two innings on the day.
It’s a fun competition and win or lose players really get to enjoy themselves. Various clubs organise the different grades which are scheduled as follows:
U10’s run by Helensburgh on March 2nd at Helensburgh.
U11’s run by Port Kembla on 17th February at Darcy Wentworth.
U12’s run by Keira on 24th February at Johanson Park.
U14B’s run by Corrimal on 10th February at Dalton Park.
U14A’s run by Balgownie on 3rd February at Dalton Park.
U16B’s run by Dapto on 17th February at Reed Park.
U16A’s run by Wests and University on 24th February at Figtree and University Ovals Hawks win again at home as fund raising continues
A clutch three-pointer by Kavossy Franklin has lifted the Wollongong Hawks to a thrilling 91-89 victory over the South Dragons at the WIN Entertainment Centre on Friday January 25.
The Hawks players hope their inspiring performance on the court at home lift the fundraising efforts by FOTH (Friends of the Hawks) - see below for details.
With Wollongong trailing 88-89, Franklin controlled the offence before calmly draining a three from the top of the arc with 15 seconds remaining. The Dragons had snatched an 89-88 lead (their first since 3-2) on Jacob Holmes' triple with just over a minute to play, having played catch-up all night.
Joe Ingles' last gasp jumper from the baseline hit the back of rim and Larry Davidson secured the rebound as the Dragons suffered their 12th consecutive loss. Franklin finished with 20 points and six boards against his former team, Cam Tragardh had a game-high 22 points and playing in his 400th game, Hawks captain Mat Campbell had 17 points.

''I played this game long enough to know any win is a good win,'' Hawks coach Eric Cooks said. ''We definitely let ourselves down in that fourth quarter, probably the whole second half we didn't play with the intensity and defensive awareness that we needed. We did a good job at getting second shots and getting a few easy ones.''
Wollongong owned the glass 50-40, hauling in 20 on the offensive end, while only committing eight turnovers.
''20 offensive rebounds; when you're playing good 'D' and you make a team miss like that and they get a little tip-in, it's just too many,'' Dragons coach Shane Heal said.
''It really takes it out of you by the end of the game.''
Bakari Hendrix topped South with 18 points, while Cortez Groves had 11 points in his return to Wollongong.
''It's really disappointing because the guys were able to bounce back and have a pretty good crack at it tonight,'' Heal said.
Tragardh exploited holes in South's interior during the opening moments, enjoying a pair of easy buckets inside before stepping outside and connecting on a series of jumpers.
Wollongong led by as much as 14 in the first, Tragardh posting ten points to eventually have his team up 29-19 at quarter-time.
Four quick points from Hendrix and a triple from Groves made it a five-point ballgame early in the second.
The Hawks continually responded from the outside as Ben Castle, Cam Rigby, Campbell and Aaron Trahair all struck from long-range to maintain a seven-point buffer.
The Dragons closed in with an 8-0 run capped by a Matt Burston's layup, but at 47-46 South missed four consecutive free-throws (9-of-18 on the night) to tie the game before Ingles finally locked the scores.
Franklin had the last score of the half with a sweet floater and Wollongong escaped with four late points to hold a 51-48 edge at the main break.
A 7-0 spurt helped Wollongong lead by as much as ten as Franklin energised his team with big plays at both ends of the floor.
Rigby's triple pushed the Hawks to 69-60, but South closed the period strongly with Ingles providing the last five points on a breakaway slam and three-point play to shave the deficit to four (69-65).
Trahair opened the fourth with a triple before the Dragons nabbed two steals and peeled off seven unanswered points to tie the game at 72-72.
The Hawks built an 11-point gap with six minutes left, but South slowly crept back into the game, Holmes' first of his two big threes got the Dragon's within one (84-85).
After Holmes hit another three the Dragons took the lead, but Franklin saved the day for the Hawks with his own long bomb to ice the game.
Both teams are on the road on Wednesday with the Hawks (8-16) facing the Sydney Kings and the Dragons (4-21) heading to Singapore to take on the Slingers.
