Wolves shock Blacktown City

In soccer’s Premier Youth League the 5th placed Wolves under 18s inflicted the first defeat on previously undefeated competition leader Blacktown City by a convincing 5 goals to 1. In the 16s the lowly placed Wolves were again shock winners over 3rd placed Blacktown with a hard fought 1 nil victory.

The Blacktown City under 14 and 15 sides, however, turned the tables on the Wolves. In a closely contested match, top team Blacktown 15s won 2 – 1 over the 3rd placed Wolves. In the 14s second placed Blacktown won convincingly over the cellar dweller Wolves 4 nil.

However, the 13s match turned out to be a tough nil all draw even though Blacktown (4th) was well above the Wolves (8th) on the table

Wests Cardinals remain hot in Baseball

Wests Cardinals extended their hot start to the 2008 IBL season, racking up their fourth consecutive win with a gritty 6-1 effort over the Berkeley Eagles at Cringila Park.

Cards pitcher Jamie Simon anchored his team with a complete eight inning performance, allowing just one run and five hits against the premiers, while Wests’ three runs in the opening inning proved enough for victory. Trent D'Antonio got the Cards on the board with a two-run double in the first dig, knocking in Chase Richardson and Paul Trembearth.

Cards added another run in the third on Nathan Grogan's RBI single to left field, scoring D'Antonio and the home side later capitalised on five walks in the sixth to tack on two more runs.

Simon, known for overpowering hitters, had six strikeouts, but did most of his damage inducing ground ball outs from the Berkeley batters.

Kaine Abbott scored the Eagles’ only run in the eighth; he finished 2 from 4 to lead his team, while the Cards six hits came off six different bats.

Despite registering just one more hit (6-5) and committing three errors to two, Wests made the most of their scoring opportunities to squeeze out the win and remain undefeated.

At Dalton Park, The Bulli Pirates secured their first win of the season behind strong pitching by Joe Duldig and Brendan Lower to knock off the Dapto Chiefs 5-1.

Brain Drain’s single drove in two runs for Bulli in first dig and the Bucs added another run in the second from Mark Pearson's sacrifice fly. The Chiefs responded with run in the bottom of the dig when Troy Green scored on a bases loaded walk.

The Pirates escaped the inning and went on to hold the Chiefs scoreless for the next six innings behind fine pitching from starter Joe Duldig and Brendan Lower. Duldig went four innings for three hits and one run and Lower closed with five strikeouts and two hits in four innings.

Tim Inglis started for Dapto and threw six digs for seven hits and four runs, his team committed three errors to Bulli's one and the Pirates collected nine hits to the Chiefs’ five. Luke Rich's hustling infield hit helped spark the Pirates in the fifth dig, setting up a sacrifice fly by Nick Kennedy, before Bulli added an extra run in the eighth on Steven Degabriele's RBI single.

Next round Wests Cardinals host the Dapto Chiefs at Cringilla Park and the Kiama Braves face the Berkeley Eagles at Gainsborough Reserve. Bulli Pirates have the bye but play lower grade games against Shoalhaven Mariners at Thomas Dalton Park. Report from Asa Schuster.
