Eagles close in on Cardinals in baseball
Berkeley Eagles narrowed the gap on top of the table Wests Cardinals in Saturday’s round 11 match played at Cringila Community Park. Cardinals were cruising along holding a 3-0 lead after the fourth inning but one error made in the seventh inning, when two outs had been retired, allowed the Eagles to swoop and score five unearned runs.
Eagles rally was ignited by Stuart Thompson’s two run single and backed by Chris Morgan’s two run double and Kaine Abbott’s RBI single. Eagles outhit Cardinals 10-3, Morgan and Abbott registering three hits each.
Cards starting pitcher Blake Handley pitched six innings of the game and in conceding no earned runs on six hits deserved a winning result. Eagles’ starter Josh Doyle allowed two earned runs on two hits in four innings and reliever Joe Anson allowed one earned run on one hit in three innings. Chris Morgan closed the game with two hitless shutout innings.
In a similar outcome Dapto Chiefs got up over Bulli Pirates for the first time in three meetings this season with a 4-3 result at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow. Pirates had established a 3-0 lead in the third inning but allowed Chiefs to equalise when some tardy defence in the fifth saw three errors made and three runs scored, two of which were unearned. Chiefs scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning on hits by Mitch Thompson and Mark Spears.
Pirates outhit Chiefs 8-7, Thompson (3 / 4) and Spears (2 / 2) topping chiefs batting. Asa Schuster and Joe Duldig batted 2 from 5 each for Pirates. Brendan Lower threw a complete nine innings for Pirates conceding two earned runs with seven hits and Jonathan Hall was the pick of Chiefs three pitchers with 2.1 hitless shutout innings.
