Spirit waver against Hawks

The Sydney "Westbus" Spirit (formerly West Sydney Razorbacks) have had their colours lowered for the first time in the 2008-2009 NBL pre-season, falling 121-118 to the Wollongong “ahm” Hawks on Friday night at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre (PVRSC). The game attracted a strong turn-out from the local fans and the Spirit gave them plenty to cheer about in the opening minutes, racing away to a 15-5 lead behind strong performances from twin towers Matt Knight and Julian Khazzouh.

The Hawks may have been slow off the mark but Cameron Tragardh and American import Dusty Rychart soon brought the visitors back into the game, lighting up the boards to drag their team into a 28-28 scoreline at the first break.

The Spirit's two new imports Derrick Low and David Gruber were having a significantly quieter night, scoring just two points between them in the opening period. The Hawks pushed ahead to lead 62-58 at the main break, then held that advantage to lead 88-83 going into "money-time". Low finally began to show some spark in the Spirit back-court but the Hawks had far too many scoring options and - as they had done all night - found glaring weaknesses in the Spirit defence to score crucial baskets and hold on for a 3-point victory.

For the Hawks Trigger (Tragardh) top scored bringing 33 points to the game closely followed by import Dusty Rychart with 26 and 9 boards. The Hawks will take to the road this week, taking on Adelaide in Port Lincoln, followed by a clash at the Dome on Friday night.

Wollongong Hawks 121 (Cameron Tragardh 33 points, 9 boards, 3 blocked shots, 2 assists; Dusty Rychart 26 points, 9 boards; Lindsay Tait 19 points; Kavossy Franklin 17, Matt Campbell 15, Anthony Petrie 9) defeated Sydney "Westbus" Spirit 118 (Matt Knight 20 points; Julian Khazzouh 18 points, 11 boards, 3 blocked shots; Liam Rush 17 points; Derrick Low 15; Graeme Dann 13; David Gruber 12, Damian Martin 10)

Cardinals take Club Championship; Semis on weekend

Minor premier Wests Cardinals ended their regular season recording a 3-0 win over Dapto Chiefs in the final round 20 fixture played at Hector Harvey Reserve, Dapto. Pitchers Blake Handley (7 innings, 2 hits) and Jamie Simon (2 innings, 1 hit) combined for the shutout win in the cold and damp conditions.

The early innings of this game produced no runs with Handley and rival starter Aaron Mills taking control on the mound. The break came for the visitors in the fourth inning where Jamie Simon batted in Ben Garvey for the first run.

Additional runs were scored in the next two innings, Trent D’Antonio batting in Paul Trembearth in the fifth after the latter was advanced from first to third on a hit by his brother Jeff Trembearth. The third run was scored by Nathan Grogan following an error by Chiefs.

Cardinals outhit Chiefs 10-3 and made no errors to the opposition’s four. Jamie Simon was the only hitter to record multiple hits.

The two teams have shared the honours this season with two wins each and share the same statistic for premierships won against each other in the past four seasons. Chiefs will play Bulli Pirates in the elimination semi final at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow.
