Still no result in IBL as weather plays havoc with finals

The Illawarra Baseball League 2008 first grade Grand Finals Series was washed out on Sunday when thunderstorms deluged the playing surface of the field shortly before the scheduled starting time of game two.  Saturday’s game one, played in completely contrasting weather conditions, produced a 4-1 win to Wests Cardinals over defending premier Berkeley Eagles.

The IBL Executive decided to play game two on Saturday, September 20 commencing at 11.00am and if necessary the third game would follow soon after the completion of game two.

In game one Eagles held on to a 1-0 lead from the top of the second inning until Cardinals started to fire in the fourth. In that innings the Red Birds scored twice, a leadoff single by Trent D’Antonio being immediately converted by Josh Dean’s double. Dean came home on Graham Fulcher’s one out single.

Cardinals added a third run in the sixth, Dean’s leadoff double being ultimately converted on Nathan Grogan’s two out single and sealed the game when these same batters combined with a two out situation in the eighth.

The pitching and defence on both teams was exemplary with no errors being recorded. Cardinals winning pitcher, Jamie Simon went the complete nine innings allowing one earned run on ten hits with four strikeouts. Eagles’ Chris Morgan also went the distance allowing four earned runs on ten hits and striking out seven in the process.

The game will be remembered for one outstanding outfield catch by Cardinals centerfielder Chase Richardson who claimed a great running and diving bootlaces grab in the fourth inning that deprived Eagles’ Chris Piano of an otherwise certain RBI hit.

Cardinals’ third baseman Josh Dean and leftfielder Nathan Grogan were the outstanding hitters in the game registering 3 from 4 apiece. Dean scored three of the runs and batted in the first run while Grogan batted in the final two runs.

In lower grade games Eagles defended their second grade title with an 11-9 win over Cardinals and the third grade title went to the minor premiers Bulli Pirates with a 12-3 win over Eagles.

Sunday’s Minor League games were relocated to the No.2 field as a result of overnight rain creating some surface water problems on the main field.

The fifth grade game produced a 15-11 win to Dapto Panthers (4) over Kiama Braves but the fourth grade game between Bulli Pirates and Wests Cardinals was called off when the storm also deluged the field. This game will be recommenced at 9.00am on Saturday, September 20.
