Edwards bags ten as Brown scores century in junior cricket

West’s T Edwards had an outstanding all round performance in the first round of the combined Illawarra/South Coast Junior Competition for under 14A’s last weekend. He took 3/13 in Helensburgh’s first innings and then an amazing 7/10 in their second. Not only that he top scored in West’s innings with 49. Also in the 14A’s C Brown of Balgownie scored 101 while Rhys Noronha just missed out with 95.

The first round of the combined Illawarra and South Coast junior cricket competitions in under 16A’s was completed last weekend. These were two day games. Winners in the 16A’s first round (two day games) were Wests Blue over Wests Red, Thirroul over Port Kembla, Balgownie had a narrow win over Corrimal while Lake Illawarra easily accounted for Albion Park. Warilla had a bye.

In the local under 16A derby between the two Wests sides notable performances came from M Calder who made 57 while B Hurry showed his all round skill with 37 runs and 4/18 for Wests Blue. Jones took 5/21 for Wests Red. Wests Blue at 8/251 (declared) prevailed over Wests Red 127 and 1/28.

In round 2 of the 16B’s W Lucas top scored with 57 in Dapto’s 5/147 one day game win over Oak Flats/Gerringong who scored 7 /111. Helensburgh’s McCrae  with 70 and Ring 56 led their team to a big win over The Rail/Razorback Bulls by 5/191 to 6/109. Due to J Wellins' almost lone hand of 70, Port Kembla was able to reach 7/122 win for a narrow win over Thirroul White’s 4/120.

In the round 1 of the 14A’s (two day games), winners included Warilla with an outright win over Albion Park, and Balgownie had a first innings win over Shellharbour City but just failed to take the last Shellharbour wicket to claim an outright. Other winners were Corrimal over Thirroul, Dapto with a big win over Kiama and Wests with an outright over Helensburgh. Outstanding batting performances in the round besides Brown’s century for Balgownie were R Noronha’s 95, B Redman’s 65 for Dapto, M Nelson’s 51 for Corrimal.  As reported above T Edwards with his ten wickets for the match was the outstanding bowler of the round but he was well supported by team mate Hunt who took 4/28 in Helensburgh’s first innings.  In Balgownie’s win over Shellharbour B Chapman took 4/13 in the first innings and K Brockley took 4/7 in the second innings to almost snare the outright victory.

The Illawarra under 14B, 12, 11 and 10 also completed their first rounds – all one day games.
