Illawarra’s near misses in junior representative cricket

Illawarra junior cricket’s Inter-Association representative teams finished the five preliminary rounds with the story of “so near yet so far” particularly for the under 12s and 13s.

In the Cawsey Shield, Illawarra went down to Camden after a batting collapse for 62 with J Murphy playing a lone hand for 24. In reply Camden was too strong and scored 6/124. As a result Illawarra finished second in their division to Penrith with whom they tied in round 4 and thereby missed out on the semis.

In the Gee Shield (under 13) Illawarra had a bye in round 5 and had to rely on Sutherland to lose its last round match to make the semis.  In very cold and windy conditions Sutherland beat Bankstown to claim the top spot in the Division #4 pool to qualify for the WS Gee Shield semi-final. Sutherland won in convincing fashion closing at 3/186 after 50 overs. Bankstown was then bowled out for 111 runs to give Sutherland a big victory. Illawarra finished on the same points as Sutherland but were eliminated from the semi final race on batting/bowling quotients with Sutherland at 1.855 and Illawarra at 1.307.

In the Weblin Shield (under 15) against Camden, Illawarra batted first and were travelling well at 1 for 107 due to a 78 run second wicket partnership from Stewart and Hand. However a mini collapse in which Illawarra lost 4 for 13 saw the team in trouble until Hutcheon scored 43 before being run out. Eventually Illawarra were all out for 194 in the sixtieth over.  In reply, Camden were in early trouble  at 2 wickets for 2 runs after Illawarra’s opening bowler S Flanagan dismissed both openers for ducks. However, Camden’s middle order rallied well to pass Illawara’s score in the 55th over for the loss of 5 wickets.

In the Watson Shield (under 16) game against Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hills, Illawarra bowlers were on top early to have Hornsby 8 for 68 but a 33 run ninth wicket stand saw the team reach 103 before being dismissed in the 47th over. Top bowlers for Illawarra were Denhartog with 4/15, Zwolak with 2/11 and Wright with 2/21. To have a chance to qualify for the semis Illawarra went for quick runs to chase an outright victory. Openers McKenzie (34) and Crawford (77 not out) had an opening stand of 63. Calder also scored 29 not out to see Illawarra declare at 2/155 off 27 overs. Putting Hornsby in again, Illawarra’s bowlers could not repeat the first inning=s performance and Hornsby was 2/54 when stumps were drawn. With 3 first innings wins and two losses, Illawarra missed out on the semis.

Overall results for Illawarra teams in round 5 were:

Cawsey Shield (Under 12):
Illawarra 62 (J Murphy 24) and 7/39 (C Whittington 18) lost to Camden 6/124 (D Saul 2/8)
Illawarra came second in Division 4 and thereby missed out on the semi-finals.

Gee Shield (Under 13):
Illawarra had a bye in round 5 and had to rely on Sutherland to lose its last match to make the semis. Unfortunately, Sutherland was victorious and pipped Illawarra for the semi spot in Division 4.

Moore Shield (under 14):
Illawarra 8/129 lost to Hawkesbury 9/141
Despite a number of very competitive efforts Illawarra did not pick up a win in the five games played.

Weblin Shield (under 15):
Illawarra 194 (J Stewart 40, J Hand 43, L Hutcheon 43) lost to Camden 5/196 (S Flanagan 3/27)
As with the Moore Shield team, Illawarra’s Weblin Shield team missed out on a win in the five rounds played.

Watson Shield (under 16):
Illawarra 2/155 declared (G Crawford 77 not out, M McKenzie 34) defeated Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hills 103 (E Denhartog 4/15, J Zwolak 2/11, S Wright 2/21) and 2/54 (A Green 2/10)
