Two tons in 16A cricket match as Bally lose close one in under 12

In last weekend’s games both B Mammone of Port Kembla and B Lisle of Albion Park picked up centuries in their team’s clash. Mammone’s 100 not out came in Port’s first innings of 3/257 which also included 78 from M Spasnich and 36 from J Zwolak. In reply Albion Park could only manage 59 in its first innings with Port’s D Mathews taking 3/13. When sent in again Albion Park fared much better with B Lisle scoring 100 not out in his side’s second innings of 3/131 to restrict Port to a first innings win.

The unluckiest player of the round was West Blue’s M McKenzie who was run out for 98 in his team’s 16A clash with Balgownie. McKenzie’s innings however enabled his team to score 4/158 to pass Balgownie’s 154 (S Dallas 57). Top wicket taker for Wests was B Hurry with 3/38.

Balgownie White and Thirroul White had a nail biter in their under 12 match. Bally batted first and were all out for 99 with J Wasson top scoring with 21 before being out hit wicket. In reply Thirroul White was in big trouble losing their first 8 batsmen for less than double figures. However the last three batsmen, L Jones (22) and L Campion (9 not out) and M Bailey (3 not out) got Thirroul home at 9/100. For Balgownie M Bartlett took 4/13 and L Moran took 2/12 and three catches in the field.

In the clash between Thirroul Blue and Balgownie Black, A Kampers top scored with 70 not out in Bally’s 5/173. Captain D Saul (34) and B Brown (26) also made major contributions to Bally’s score. Thirroul were dismissed for 127 (A Cheetham run out 33) with M Saul (2/7) and D Saul (2/5) being the leading wicket takers.  Kampers completed a good all round performance by effecting two run outs and taking 1/8.

NSW second in Claxton Shield after win in Wollongong

NSW Patriots have moved to equal second in the Claxton Shield interstate baseball series after three games last weekend. All three games were played against Perth Heat.

After rain washed out the first weekend game in Canberra on Friday night, two shortened seven innings games were played in that city on Saturday. NSW took the first game 5-3 while Perth won the second 7-2.

In the third game of the weekend played at Fred Finch ground Berkeley last Sunday NSW defeated Perth 11-8. Perth never recovered from NSW’s 6 run third innings which included Illawarra local Tim Atherton’s 3 run homer. Another Illawarra product, Trent D’Antonio also made a major contribution having batted in two runners in the 7th.

As a result of the weekend’s games NSW has moved up to equal second with Perth Heat with a 4-3 win-loss record. Victoria heads the table.

Hurley finishes great year with Queensland swim win

After claiming a world record in the 50 metre backstroke short course World Cup earlier in the year, Illawarra’s Robert Hurley is finishing the year at the Queensland long course titles. After the first two days of the meet he has picked up a gold, a silver and a bronze despite being in heavy training and not tapering for the events.

On the third day of the championships in the 400 metre freestyle, Hurley indicated he is the heir apparent to the recently retired Grant Hackett in winning over a field including Olympians Nick Ffrost and Kenrick Monk.

Previously on the second day of the event Hurley took a bronze in the 200m freestyle behind Monk and Ffrost. A short time later on the second night he came second to AIS team mate Ashley Delaney in the 100m backstroke.
