Chiefs, Cardinals and Eagles get up in Illawarra Baseball League

Dapto Chiefs recorded their second win in as many rounds defeating Kiama Braves 14-6 in their round 2 fixture of the 2009 Illawarra Baseball League premiership played at Kiama Downs. The home team was within striking distance with an 8-6 score resulting after six innings but a number of errors in the seventh allowed Chiefs to run in four unearned runs to take control of the game.

In other fixtures defending premier Wests Cardinals were relentless with first grade debutants Shoalhaven Mariners in their match at Fred Finch Park, Berkeley. Cardinals won 25-0 in seven innings outhitting Mariners 22-4. The remaining game saw Berkeley Eagles get up 12-2 over Northern Pirates in eight innings at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow.

Braves were the better hitting side over Chiefs racking up 12 hits to 10. Evan Hayes continued his good run as one of the better hitters in the League batting 3 from 4 with 2 RBI's while Ben Griffin proved that pitchers can bat by recording 2 / 3 with 3 RBI’s. Jonathon Hall and Josh Barques batted 2 / 3 each for Chiefs.

Hall had the standout pitching performance of the game hurling the final four innings for Chiefs and allowing three hits and one earned run. Griffin produced Braves best effort with four innings for two hits and three earned runs.

Centerfielder Chase Richardson was the standout hitter for Cardinals with four hits from six at bats and five RBI’s. The support came from Lee Vlasoff and Nathan Grogan with 3 / 5 each. Vlasoff hit the season’s first homer with his two run effort in the first inning.

Jamie Simon (5 innings, two hits) and Blake Handley (two innings, two hits) combined for Cardinals shutout while David Mitchell closed for Mariners with 2.1 shutout innings.

Berkeley Eagles got away with three runs in the first inning but were kept in check until scoring one run in the sixth. A flurry in the next two innings produced eight runs before the Bucs ran in two in the eighth.

Kaine Abbott, Tim Atherton and Mick Shipp all gained three hits for Eagles and batted in eight runs between them. Hayden Beard and Chris Morgan pitched three shutout innings apiece for Eagles and John Woonan went five innings for nine hits and four earned runs for Pirates.

Second Grade: Cardinals 19 Mariners 1; Eagles 3 Pirates 1; Chiefs 11 Braves 6

Third Grade: Cardinals 33 Mariners 2; Pirates 5 Eagles 4; Chiefs 12 Braves 2

Minor League - Sunday, April 5: Warriors (5) 20 Braves 10; Pirates 7 Warriors (4) 5; Panthers (5) 17 Chiefs 9; Cardinals 7 Panthers (4) 6

The next round will be played in two week’s time following a break over the Easter weekend. In round 3 fixtures on April 18 Dapto Chiefs host Wests Cardinals at Hector Harvey Reserve, Dapto, Shoalhaven Mariners play Berkeley Eagles at Fred Finch Park, Berkeley and Northern Pirates play Kiama Braves at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow. First grade games commence at 2.00pm.

Penrith knocks over undefeated Wollongong teams in Premier Youth League

In last weekend’s Premier Youth League round against Penrith Nepean United, Wollongong’s under 16s and 18s tasted their first defeats in 6 rounds. The trip to Penrith had started well for Wollongong fans with the 13s picking up a good win by 3 nil. That, however, was the only joy of the day with Wollongong losing the next four grades.
Results for the round against Penrith Nepean United were: 
Under 13: Wollongong won 3 nil
Under 14: Wollongong lost 2 -1
Under 15: Wollongong lost 2 nil
Under 16: Wollongong lost 1 nil   
Under 18: Wollongong lost 2 nil   

The next round is to be played after the Easter break with Wollongong teams to play against Marconi, at Elizabeth Park, Bellambi with the 13s beginning at 9 am on Saturday April 18.

Sydney FC puts on holiday camps

Is there a budding Hyundai A-League player or even a future Socceroo in your household, or do your children simply enjoy making new friends and having fun? Either way, Hyundai A-League club Sydney FC and some of their stars promise that they will make the next school holidays a winner for you and your family with coaching clinics being held for children aged 6 to 12 years at our Macquarie University training fields. Each participant will be shown the skills to help them improve their enjoyment of the ‘The Beautiful Game.”

The first week will start on Tuesday the 14th of April through to Thursday the 16th; with the second week commencing Tuesday the 21st until Thursday the 23rd of April. Each day will start at 9am and conclude at 12 noon. Participants will receive 9 hours of first class coaching, a Sydney FC pack including a Sydney FC holiday clinic jersey, shorts, socks, show bag and Certificate of Participation, along with the opportunity to have their shirts signed and to show the Sydney FC players their skills.

Not everyone can play for Sydney FC, but they can increase their own individual enjoyment and interest in the world game by improving their skills with professional coaches and players. Register for Sydney’s World Masters Games: As at late March 6700 people had registered for the World Masters games in Sydney on October 10 -18, 2009. Over 28 sports will cater for participants of varying standards and ages. For example, tennis has singles, doubles and mixed doubles in ten year age brackets from 30+ to 80+ with A grade for competition players and B grade for social players and beginners.
