Dapto remains unbeaten in Illawarra Baseball
Dapto Chiefs have managed to keep their unbeaten run this season intact with an epic extra innings 4-3 win over premiers Wests Cardinals in the round 13 clash played at Cringila Community Park. The ten innings marathon was the first extra innings game played in the League since round 8 (May 22) of the 2005 season.
The foundation of Chiefs win was the performance by pitcher Jarrett Commane who hurled the complete ten innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out eight. Commane outlasted two opposition pitchers – starter Blake Handley who allowed three earned runs on seven hits in five innings and reliever Jamie Simon with one earned run on three hits in five innings. Commane’s pitch count of 150 outnumbered the combined Cardinals pitchers’ counts.
Another significant contribution to the win came from Chiefs outfielder Ben Shepherd who fought off a two out situation in the tenth to register a safe hit and drive in Beau Garrett for the winning run.
Prior to this a 1-1 score after four innings was broken when Chiefs added two runs in the top of the fifth on RBI hits by Craig Leighton and Commane. Cardinals’ response eventually came in the bottom of the eighth where Lee Vlasoff’s one out single drove in Chase Richardson and Shaun Denison
Chiefs outhit Cardinals 10-5 and made three inconsequential errors to Cardinals nil errors. Craig Leighton, Stuart McCarthy and Beau Garrett registered two hits each for Chiefs while Lee Vlasoff was Cardinals’ most productive batting in two runs on his only hit.
Berkeley Eagles defeated Shoalhaven Mariners 8-2, Mariners holding Eagles to a 2-2 score resulting after the second innings. Eagles added two in fourth and three in fifth. Hits were Eagles 15, Mariners 2. Joe Anson was the best with bat at 3 / 5 and one RBI. Chris Morgan, Luke Jennings and Tim Atherton all had two hits.
Pirates defeated Kiama Braves 9-5 taking control of the game in the fifth innings where six runs were scored to break a 1-1 score. Pirates’ John Noonan was game winning pitcher with five innings for seven hits and two earned runs. Braves easily outhit Pirates 13-7 but left 10 runners on base. Josh Parker, Aaron Sloan batted 3 / 5 for Braves with RBI's and Corey Hayman and Brad Drain registered two hits each for Pirates. Andrew Clifford batted in three of Pirates runs.
Table - Chiefs 96%, Cardinals 82%, Eagles 71%, Pirates 42%, Braves 13%, Mariners 4%.

Illawarra Stingrays clean sweep in women’s football
Illawarra women’s soccer fans had a great day last Sunday when the Stingrays were too strong for all Penrith Nepean United teams. The Premier league side continued their winning form to dominate the opposition and win 5 – 1. The Illawarra reserves had a tougher than expected encounter with Penrith, the cellar dwellers, to win by 2 – 1.
The Stingrays Premier League team currently tops the table from the Macarthur Rams while the Reserves are running second behind Sydney University. Despite the wins in the 12s, 14s and 16s, these teams area all still outside the top four.
Results of last weekend’s games between Illawarra Stingrays and Penrith Nepean United at JJ Kelly Park were:
Premier League: Illawarra won 5 - 1
Reserve grade: Illawarra won 2 - 1
Under 16s: Illawarra won 2 nil
Under 14s: Illawarra won 1 nil
Under 12s: Illawarra won 3 - 2
The Stingrays next round of games against Macarthur Rams will be played at Lynwood Park on Sunday July 19 with the under 12s beginning at 9am. As the Premier League clash will be between the first and second placed teams a win by the Stingrays should tie up the minor premiership.
