Cardinals take out Pirates as others washed out

Wests Cardinals had a comfortable 12-2 win in seven innings over Northern Pirates in the only first grade game to take the field in round 14 fixtures of the 2009 Illawarra Baseball League premiership. Saturated conditions at Fred Finch Park, Berkeley saw the other two fixtures scheduled for that venue called off as a result.

Cardinals scored in each of the first five innings and kept the visitors scoreless until the fifth for a 9-1 score to result. A three run rally in the bottom of the seventh created a 12-2 margin causing the application of the ten run rule.

Jamie Simon pitched all seven innings for the home team allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out nine. The Pirates defence failed to back starting pitcher Lachlan Crawley who allowed six runs, three being unearned, on eight hits in four innings. Reliever Luke Rich allowed three earned runs on four hits in 2.2 innings.

Second baseman Paul Trembearth had an outstanding game with the bat for Cardinals registering 4 / 5 with 2 RBI’s and being supported by shortstop Nathan Grogan and first baseman Graham Fulcher with 2 / 4 each. Catcher Trent D’Antonio did not register a hit but amassed 3 RBI’s, two coming from sacrifice hits. Travis Dutton was Pirates best with 2 / 3.

Despite Pirates having five errors and Cardinals having two, both teams recorded two double plays in the game.

Table - Chiefs 96%, Cardinals 83%, Eagles 71%, Pirates 39%, Braves 13%, Mariners 4%.

In round 15 fixtures scheduled for Saturday, July 18 Dapto Chiefs are up against Berkeley Eagles at Hector Harvey Park, Dapto, Wests Cardinals play Kiama Braves at Cringila Community Park and Pirates play Shoalhaven Mariners at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow. First grade commences at 2.00pm.

Illawarra Hawks miss out by a point in State League Basketball

The Illawarra Hawks have just missed out on the crucial second spot in Pool D the State League Basketball. In last weekend’s double round, the Hawks began well on Saturday July 11 by defeating Springwood Scorchers 70 – 59 after leading 33 – 20 at half time. On the same day, their rivals for second spot Macarthur Heat went down to the undefeated Hawkesbury Jets by 76 – 63.

These results meant that Sunday’s clash between the Illawarra Hawks and the Macarthur Heat would determine the second play-off position behind the Jets. The game did not disappoint the fans. The Hawks were just on top by 29 – 27 at half time but the Heat finished slightly stronger to take the match by a point 72 – 71. B Dragun (15), C Jackson (14) and B Bonham (12) were top scorers for the Hawks.

Illawarra Hawks 70 (B Bonham 15, J Goode 14, R Epe 11) defeated Springwood Scorchers 59 (T Allawaliah 15, K Browning 11, and A Pachecki 10)

Macarthur Heat 72 (C Nattrass 26, B Ryan 12, M McCoy 12) defeated Illawarra Hawks 71 (B Dragun 15, C Jackson 14, B Bonham 12)

Wollongong’s 14s and 15s prove too strong for Institute of Sport

Wollongong’s games against Manly United in Premier Youth League were washed out last weekend. However, the 14s had and 15s had played games against the NSW Institute of Sport on July 7 at Unanderra Oval. Wollongong won both games by 4 nil.

After the weekend, Wollongong’s 18s still lead their competition even though they have played two games less than second placed Blacktown City and three games less than 3rd team, the Sutherland Sharks. Wollongong also has its 13s (5th), 14s (5th) and 16s (2nd) in the play-off top five while the 15s are 6th.

Wollongong teams play their next round against West Sydney Berries at Lidcombe Oval with the 13s beginning at 9 am on Saturday July 25 after a holiday break next weekend.

Hands Up! Volunteers for Sporting Clubs Pilot

NSW Sport and Recreation and Castle Hill RSL Club are piloting a new program to increase volunteering in sport.

Hands Up! links sporting clubs affiliated with the RSL Club with retired members and visitors to fill the volunteering gap.

“There is a widening gap between player and volunteer participation in organised sport,” said Sport and Recreation Minister Kevin Greene, who announced the program last month.

“While participation is increasing at about 1% a year, volunteer numbers are falling at a similar rate. “The end result is fewer volunteers carrying a greater share of the workload which creates stress and increases the volunteer dropout rate.

“The Hands Up! partnership with Castle Hill RSL is designed to encourage retired club members and visitors to give some of their spare time to local sporting groups.

“The highly skilled baby boomer generation is soon to reach retirement age so we are looking at ways to engage retirees,” said Mr Greene.

“It is early days, but the first step for Hands Up! was an information night held at Castle Hill RSL last month,” says Cristy Cotter from NSW Sport and Recreation.
