Illawarra juniors help Wollongong stay in soccer’s NSW Premier League
While having a new major sponsor and having WIN Stadium as a home ground may have been factors in keeping Wollongong in NSW Premier League there is no doubt that the outstanding performances of the juniors were also significant. Wollongong/Illawarra teams dominated the results in both the NSW Champion of Champions and the Premier Youth League.
Illawarra football had seven teams who qualified for the finals of the Football NSW’s Champion of Champions competition. In this competition the Champions of particular age groups from every Association (Metropolitan & Country) in NSW are pitted against each other in a knockout style to decide the ultimate Champion of Champions in each age group.
The finals were played on the weekend of October 24 and 25. Five out of the seven teams were successful with two Balgownie teams picking up titles. The results involving Illawarra teams were:
Under 18 Women: Unanderra 6 defeated Springwood United 4
All Age Women: University of Wollongong 6 defeated Milton Ulladulla 0
Under 10: Figtree 1 lost to Bondi United 6
Under 11: Balgownie 4 defeated Wakehurst 1
Under 13: Oak Flats 2 defeated Gladesville Ravens 1
Under 15: Balgownie 4 defeated Earlwood 3
Under 17: Wollongong Olympic lost to Inter Lions 5
As previously reported Wollongong teams had taken out 3 titles out of the five NSW Premier Youth League grades in 2009. They had won the under 13s, 16s and 18s
Sportslive Comment: There is no doubt that Football NSW could not ignore the local talent coming up from the Illawarra – hence it did not relegate Wollongong from Premier League to Super League even though its seniors finished with the wooden spoon.
